Kamasi Washington has released his cover of “My Friend of Misery”, set to appear on The Metallica Blacklist. The forthcoming tribute to the metal giants’ 1991 self-titled album is due out on September 10th in conjunction with the LP’s 30th anniversary.
The jazz saxophonist had previously debuted his rendition of the track on July 18th during a star-studded show at the Hollywood Bowl. In addition to special guest Thundercat, Washington welcomed Metallica’s own Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo for the live debut.
Washington’s studio offering finds the celebrated instrumentalist tapping into that same fury found on the landmark metal album. With a combination of dizzying saxophone leads, swirling drum breaks, and the captivating vocals of Patrice Quinn, the cover results in a unique musical concoction that combines the technical mastery of jazz with the raw emotion of hard rock.
The Metallica Blacklist also features covers of “My Friend of Misery” recorded by Rodrigo y Gabriella, Izïa, and Cherry Glazer. The 53-track album hosts contributions from St. Vincent, My Morning Jacket, Phoebe Bridgers, J. Balvin, IDLES, Flatbush Zombies, Portugal. The Man, Jason Isbell, Mac DeMarco, Moses Sumney, Rina Sawayama, The Neptunes, Weezer, Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode), Darius Rucker, OFF!, Chris Stapleton, Diet Cig, Cage the Elephant, Miley Cyrus (feat. WATT, Elton John, Yo-Yo Ma, Robert Trujillo, and Chad Smith), and many more.

Along with Washington’s cover, Metallica shared an early demo version of “My Friend of Misery”, taken from then-bassist Jason Newsted’s “riff tapes.” The early rendition is just one of many outtakes, demos, and other previously-unheard tracks set to appear on the 30th-anniversary edition of Metallica (aka The Black Album), out on September 10th.
