On Wednesday night, New York City native Karina Rykman brought her namesake trio to Brooklyn’s Babys All Right for a sold-out performance celebrating the release of her debut LP, Joyride, and the start of her biggest headlining tour to date.

Following an opening set by Free Whenever, Eyewitness News ABC7NY‘s Sandy Kenyon, who recently profiled Rykman for a profile segment currently running in taxi cabs around the city, took the stage at the brimming Williamsburg club to issue a glowing introduction for the woman of the hour.

Karina Rykman (bass, vocals), Adam November (guitar/looper/effects), and Chris Corsico (drums) proceeded to command the packed room with invigorating live recreations of tracks from the new LP, providing her steadfast local contingent of fans with a peak at the potential for enveloping psych-rock grit within the album’s mellow, dreamy material. The trio also strayed from the Joyride path on various occasions, whether to trudge through Wet Leg‘s “Chaise Longue”, howl out an unhinged rendition of Talking Heads‘ “Psycho Killer”, or take the crowd on an instrumental detour through Mary J. Blige‘s “Family Affair”. Her older material got some love, too, with the close-to-home “City Kids” receiving a notably uproarious stamp of approval from her fellow New Yorkers.

Joyride, out now in various digital and physical formats, was co-produced by childhood friend Gabe Monro and Phish‘s Trey Anastasio, whose playing is also featured on five of the album’s nine songs, including the title track/lead single. The album also features Rykman’s live bandmates (Adam November and Chris Corsico) in addition to contributions from Veronica Stewart-Frommer and Marlo Shankweiler of Melt, drummers Johnny Kimock and Josh Greenzeig, and keyboardists Aron Magner (The Disco Biscuits) and Elijah Fox.
