On September 13th, Khruangbin traveled to ACL Live At The Moody Theater to tape the band’s debut on Austin City Limits. Ahead of the episode’s premiere on Saturday, which also hosts Leon Bridges‘ debut on the show, the Houston-bred trio has shared live videos of “People Everywhere (Still Alive)” and “White Gloves”.

Taken from the band’s debut LP, 2015’s The Universe Smiles Upon You, “People Everywhere” gets the proper live treatment. Though Khruangbin hovers in the vicinity of jam—at least it did until Bridges catapulted the group into the mainstream stratosphere—the group is by no means a “jam band.” That being said, the 7:15 minute runtime of the live version dwarfs the 2:39 minute version found on the record.

Rather than locking into any sort of communal improvisation, each member of the power trio gets their time to shine. This begins at the elongated intro where Mark Speer teases viewers before dropping into the main riff. It extends to bassist Laura Lee contributing some ad-libbed vocals, adding “after 2020” to the titular refrain of “Still Alive”. Finally, it goes clear on through to drummer Donald “DJ” Johnson breaking down the rhythm into what could have easily gone on for another seven minutes and labeled as an “extended dance mix.” As for “White Gloves”, it gets a more traditional telling that stays true to the album rendition.
