Japan’s very own psych-rock heavyweight, Kikagau Moyo, has released a new live album, Live at Levitation. The seven-song album comes as part of the Reverberation Appreciation Society‘s effort to capture key moments in psychedelic rock history, and live music in Austin, TX.
Live at Levitation showcases one of Kikagaku Moyo’s very first U.S. shows back in 2014 on the A-side, ending with the band’s triumphant return, five years later in 2019, on the B-side. Side A, which Craig Lawrence recorded and mixed at Austin Psych Fest in 2014, begins with “Elevation Jam”. “Streets of Calcutta”, which originally appeared on the band’s 2014 Lost Children album, comes next, before “Tree Smoke” and “Smoke and Mirrors” finish off the A-Side. The B-Side starts with “Dripping Sun”, from the band’s 2018 album, Masana Temples, followed by “Gatherings” and “Nazo Nazo”. All three songs on the B-Side come from the band’s 2019 performance at LEVITATION.
“Playing Austin Psych Fest / Levitation was always a goal from our earliest days of the band – to join the psychedelic community for a weekend of music and present our live performance,” said the band in a press release.
“This show in 2014 was a landmark for us. To return years later in 2019 and find the same welcome, the dream was still very much alive and well.”
While the vinyl version of Live at Levitation is sold out, fans can listen and share via Bandcamp. Below, check out the full album and a pro-shot video of the “Smoke and Mirrors” performance from 2014.
