Brett Morgen, director of Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, told Deadline that the new Kurt Cobain solo album will be released on November 6th, coinciding with the film release. As of now, the solo album is untitled, but will cull from tapes and recording that Morgen accessed during his making of the documentary. It’s a companion disc, so to speak.
A more extensive interview with Billboard.com revealed that the album will showcase previously unreleased music featured in the film in addition to the dozen tracks by the Nirvana front man. Also included are “audio montages that Kurt Cobain created” and “a sketch comedy routine featuring Kurt voicing all of the characters.”
Morgen hopes to achieve a certain mood with these recordings, saying the soundtrack “is curated to feel as though one were sitting in Kurt’s living room watching him create over the course of an afternoon” and will range “from thrash to ragtime and everything in between.” He goes on, noting the album reflects a a “lighter portrait of Kurt than one might expect. You really get a sense of how happy he was simply by creating himself. His lyrics are really playful, and, at times, you can feel his smile and warmth coming through.”
As Kurt Cobain and Nirvana fan, what more could you ask for?
