Like everyone else, Lake Street Dive is aware things are not ideal right now for the youths of the world. That is why the indie pop group devoted their latest music video and single, “Making Do”, to the next generation experiencing their formative years during these uncertain times.

This latest single ends a prolonged drought of content from Lake Street Dive, who haven’t put out any new music since 2018’s Free Yourself Up. The Boston-bred group hosted two volumes of the Lounge Around Sounds Variety Hour webcast back in April and May, and have since revived the series on September 21st with two more installment set for October 28th and November 23rd.

In this triumphant return for the feel-good group, its apparent that, while much of the world has gone to hell, Lake Street Dive has retained much of the upbeat bent that makes the band’s music so enjoyable. Even in the opening lines, after wishing the next generation a Merry Christmas and recognizing them for “working harder than ever,” the band acknowledges, “And the coffee sucks/You know, Colombia and Kenya got too damn hot/And now you’re making do with what you got.”

With that, viewers come face-to-face with the many people—not just Gen Zs, who are “Making Do” with the new reality they have been dealt. With an underlying environmental message, the video even features a cameo from Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey, co-sponsor of the Green New Deal.

“‘Making Do’ is about the world that future generations are inheriting,” the band said in a statement. “We are all concerned about what is happening to our planet, so the song explores what arises when we consider both our role in it and our responsibility to address it. Hopefully it comes through as a rallying cry to do the best you can with what you have.”
