After 17 concerts in 13 states over six weeks, LaMP brought its fall tour to a close on Saturday in New York City. The instrumental supergroup of Joe Russo’s Almost Dead guitarist Scott Metzger with Trey Anastasio Band/Soul Monde keyboardist Ray Paczkowski and drummer Russ Lawton finished their fall outing at the familiar Brooklyn Bowl.

Since forming in late 2018, LaMP has built an underground reputation for enthralling live performances. During the height of the pandemic, the band raised its profile by releasing its self-titled debut—and to date lone studio release—in July 2020. The boiled-down power trio format fully displays each member’s varied skills, earned through a lifetime of well-documented gigging. Mixing intricate jazz elegance with gregarious funk grooves—and even Saturday’s “Tango” that wasn’t really a tango—LaMP consistently gives jam band fans the engaging and high-intensity improvisation they hunger for without any of the filler. The project appears to serve as just as much a respite for its members as its fans, with Metzger, Lawton, and Paczkowski able to escape the sometimes grandiose void of playing in a theater in favor of intimate club gigs that once again put them face-to-face with the audience.

LaMP still has a few dates left on the calendar with a string of Colorado shows next month alongside The Jauntee. In January 2025, the band will play a three-show swing through the Northeast with stops in Portland, ME (1/24–1/25) and Killington, VT (1/26) ahead of a growing schedule of summer festival dates including appearances at Northlands and FloydFest.
