Lawrence Delivers Soulful Stripped-Down Set At Georgia Comes Alive [Watch]

On Saturday, December 26th, 50+ artists and hundreds of thousands of viewers around the world came together for Georgia Comes Alive, a virtual music festival aimed at promoting voter participation in Georgia’s Senate runoff elections on January 5th, 2021, which saw a record-breaking voter turnout.

Among the many pop powerhouses to take part in the nine-hour livestream marathon was brother- and sister-led pop-soul group Lawrence, who offered stripped-down performances of a pair of popular originals in addition to their jazzy rendering of a Christmas classic.

Clyde Lawrence (keys/vocals) introduced the first tune, “The Heartburn Song”, as “a song about how it’s gonna be alright” before kicking off the Living Room favorite’s funky keyboard groove, providing a runway for the raw emotion of Gracie Lawrence‘s unfiltered vocals. From the very start of the split-screen set, it was riveting to see the full sound of the rising outfit stripped down to the bare essentials of the Lawrences.

After that came the group’s latest original single, “Freckles”. A bouncy number about loving yourself for being yourself, the song displays Lawrence’s clever songwriting with lines like, “Yep, got full-blown acne at 22/My year’s been dope, thanks, how ’bout you?”

“Freckles”, first released in October as part of Lawrence’s 2020 live record, The Live Album (Part 1), quickly reached a massive audience. Within days of the release of the self-love anthem, a short clip of the live, pre-pandemic “Freckles” performance went viral on TikTok, generating millions of views. As Clyde Lawrence joked to Live For Live Music about the song’s runaway TikTok success, “I guess people miss live music.”

Finally, Lawrence’s Georgia Comes Alive set closed out with the siblings’ take on “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)”, which the band had released as an official single earlier that month. Even now, with Christmas almost a month behind us, the song inspires feelings of yuletide togetherness. With the soulful siblings singing about Santa Claus, viewers were transported to Christmas Eve at the Lawrence household of old, where a young Clyde and Gracie were waiting up to hear footsteps on the roof.
