If you’re not up on Lawrence yet, it’s time to get familiar. The upstart eight-piece soul-pop led by the young brother/sister duo of Clyde Lawrence (keys, vocals) and Gracie Lawrence (vocals) has been rapidly gaining steam over the last year, when they released their fantastic debut album Breakfast, produced by renowned guitarist and Grammy-winning producer Eric Krasno and featuring guest spots by Adam Deitch (Lettuce), Cory Henry (Snarky Puppy), Maurice “Mobetta” Brown, and more.
Lawrence Goes Old School In Their New Music Video For “Alibi” From Their Debut Album, Breakfast
Comprised of highly talented young performers, the band has a unique ability to bring their skilled musicianship to bear for soulfully fresh takes on contemporary hits. During the NYC-based band’s hometown performance last Thursday, May 11th, Lawrence treated Music Hall of Williamsburg to an unusual medley of covers by Chance the Rapper and Justin Bieber that flat-out blew the audience away. After jamming on the gospel-flavored Chance tune “Blessings” (off his multiple Grammy-winning 2016 release Coloring Book), the band landed smoothly on Bieber’s “Sorry” (from his smash-hit LP Purpose). While Chance and Bieber may not be your bag (the band themselves referred to the pairing as “surprisingly badass”), this soulful one-two punch from Lawrence is too catchy to be denied.
You can watch crowd-shot video of the Chance/Bieber medley from Lawrence’s 5/11/17 Brooklyn show below, via the band’s Facebook page:
Lawrence will be back in action on Sunday, May 21st at Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, AL. After that, the band will head out on tour as support for Lake Street Dive, beginning June 2nd at Saturn in Birmingham, AL.
