Bassist Juan Alderete–best known for being a member of progressive-rock outfit The Mars Volta in addition to a touring bandmate for Marilyn Manson–is in a coma after what his wife called a “Serious bicycle accident” in a statement shared on Saturday.

In a lengthy post shared to Alderete’s Facebook and Instagram pages, Juan’s wife Anne shed light on what has been a private struggle for the bassist and his family since the accident earlier this month.

“Juan was in a solo (no cars, other people) and very serious bicycle accident on 1/13/20 not far from our home,” the statement reads. “He – as always – was wearing a helmet and protective clothing but sustained serious head trauma in the form of a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI); his form of TBI is Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI) and as of today, he remains in a coma.”

Alderete continued in saying, “The only prognosis is to wait and see, as the brain is a complicated organ and the outcomes for DAI patients has a range as wide as the sea. While frustrating, it also allows for a world of positive outcomes so we can only hope for the best.”

Alderete’s accident earlier this month resulting in his current state in medical limbo puts an immediate pause on any possible reunion in the near future as singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala may have revealed last spring.

In the meantime, fans should send all the healing vibes to Juan and his family for a quick and full recovery.
