My Morning Jacket were the featured musical guest on Thursday’s episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers, where they performed “Climbing The Ladder”. The track comes from the band’s recently-released album The Waterfall II.

Issued back in July, The Waterfall II was comprised of songs recorded during the band’s initial sessions for 2015’s The Waterfall. Ahead of the sequel’s release, frontman Jim James was adamant that these aren’t songs that simply weren’t good enough for The Waterfall. Rather, the band had enough material to comprise a triple album but decided to only release the one disc because “that would have been too much and a lot of the songs would have gotten lost,” James told Rolling Stone ahead of the album’s release.

The remote performance found the alt-rock mainstays playing from a plush living room setup. The jumpy, infectious beat of “Climbing The Ladder” ushers back the enticing warmth of the band’s music, not seen in the five years since The Waterfall first arrived. Even though this track comes from a supposed sequel, the music found on The Waterfall II can stand confidently on its own merits. While the beat rolls on, James reminds us that the band, like the rest of us, is “still climbing the ladder.”
