Nathaniel Rateliff appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to perform “Time Stands” from his latest album, And It’s Still Alright. “Time Stands”, which appears on the singer’s newly released debut solo album, hears him embrace the relative solitude and simplicity he now enjoys on stage as compared to his setup with his usual backing band, The Night Sweats.

For this performance of “Time Stands”, Rateliff was joined by a string quartet along with his acoustic guitar as the stage is cloaked in darkness, reflective of a new scaled-down musical approach. Like the rest of And It’s Still Alright, Rateliff’s decision to simplify his stage presence and live sound has resulted in a greater emphasis on the power of his vocals. The song’s crescendo isn’t created by booming instrumentation, but rather the emotion in his voice as he exclaims, “Are you just too old/Or too young to carry?/Time stands in a duel/And I Stand for you.”
