As the start of the 2023–2024 NBA season approaches, the reigning league champions, the Denver Nuggets, have announced a special Grateful Dead night set to take place on October 30th, when the Nuggets are scheduled take on the Utah Jazz. Tickets for the super-heady game come with a limited edition Grateful Dead-themed jersey (modeled by Nuggets head coach Michael Malone in the photo below) and grant attendees to a pre-game concert by Dead tribute act Shakedown Street.
The Nuggets have hosted Grateful Dead-themed nights in the past, and pro sports franchises tapping into GD culture is nothing new, but this year’s promo is sure to connect with fans in Denver, a town known for loving tasty jams and heady threads just as much as it loves (various kinds of) Nuggets. The free merch is pretty sweet, even by typical Shakedown standards: The black-and-white tie-dye jersey features a mix of Nuggets and Dead iconography, from the Denver squad’s rainbow colors and pick axe insignia to the Dead’s roses, steal-your-face skull, and trademark typeface.
