Outside Lands Music Festival is set to return to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park on August 9th-11th. While the popular music festival will treat attendees to headlining performances from Paul Simon, Childish Gambino, The Lumineers, Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals, what the festival will not welcome this year is the ridiculous use of Native American headdresses worn by attendees.

For the second year in a row, organizers for the San Francisco music event have added Native American headdresses to its list of items not permitted in the festival grounds. The use of “Totems” has also been added to the list of items not allowed into the festival. While the rule may have been initially implemented in 2018, organizers are hoping to make more of a point with this year’s event.
“Out of respect for Native American heritage and culture we do not allow headdresses at Outside Lands,” a festival spokesperson mentioned recently. “We are committed to creating a safe, respectful and inclusive environment for all festival-goers to have the best experience possible.”
It’s one thing if someone wants to be the center of attention at a music festival, but it’s another move entirely if he/she doesn’t have enough creativity to come up with a unique costume of their own, resulting in the uneducated use of sacred attire used by indigenous people for thousands of years. You know, the same peoples who were strategically killed off resulting in the decimation of an entire culture by America’s earliest European settlers.
To go with the festival’s progressive attire requirements, this year’s Outside Lands will also once again feature its Grass Lands activation, a curated area focused on the emerging cannabis market.
