Back to the Starlight Theatre in Kansas City, MO for their first show there since 2012, Phish continued their dominant summer tour with a memorable performance that included a band debut.

Phish snuck a version of the Mike Gordon original song “The Last Step” into the first set, marking the eighth Phish debut of the tour and second Mike Gordon original to slip into the rotation. The first was “How Many People Are You?”, debuted during the two-night Bend, OR run, and revived during the first night in Atlanta, GA.

Both of those songs made their live debut during Gordo’s recent tour with his solo outfit, and “The Last Step” was actually a leftover tune from the Fuego sessions that found its way onto Gordon’s most recent EP, which was released back in April. No wonder why he didn’t wind up performing with the new Dead & Company band.

Of course, the first set also featured a number of memorable moments, including an opening “Gumbo”, a big “Divided Sky”, some monster jamming on “Blaze On” and a set-closing “46 Days” with some intense energy for the Kansas City crowd. This is a band that is at the top of their creative game, and their enthusiasm for their own music is readily apparent. They didn’t play a single cover during the show.

Set two opened up with an extended “Gotta Jibboo” that ran to around ten minutes, before shifting into “Twist” and grooving once again into “The Wedge”. With a quick tease of “Stash”, this was some great and powerful jam work in “The Wedge”. A thick “Down With Disease” broke out next, a fairly standard treatment with a slick segue into “Sand”. That funk-fest mellowed out with “Joy”, before the real treat of the night came at the end of the set, the second “You Enjoy Myself” of the summer tour.

From ‘Martian Monster’ To ‘YEM’ Encore, Phish Goes Big In Los Angeles

Played to perfection, this must have been a real treat for the Kansas City crowds. The dynamic tune never fails to excite.

With a “Bug” encore, Phish called it a night and thanked the crowds once more for a wonderful evening. The band will resume touring on Friday, August 7th with a performance at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. That show will be webcast as well.
