Tonight (April 14th), Phish will re-stream the three-set performance from 8/22/15, the second day of the band’s Magnaball festival at Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, NY, as the fourth episode of their ongoing archival webcast/cooking series, Dinner and a Movie.

While Phish has shared some stellar shows so far as part of Dinner and a Movie (including the 8/31/12 “F— You Face” show, the 7/27/14 Merriweather “Tweezerfest”, and 7/25/17’s Baker’s Dozen “Jam-Filled” night), fan’s are extra excited about this week’s trip back to Magnaball.

The band’s 10th festival came at the end of a highly eventful summer in the Phish world. In addition to capping one of the best summer tours of the era (not counting the Dick’s “Thank You” note which took place a few weeks later), Magnaball also came just a few months after Trey Anastasio served as the guitarist for the Grateful Dead‘s 50th-anniversary celebration, Fare Thee Well. The extensive training Trey underwent to prepare for his gigs in the Dead universe showed up in spades on Phish’s subsequent summer tour.

Even beyond the extremely high level of playing that summer, fans fondly remember Magnaball as the last Phish festival to have successfully taken place. We say “successfully” here because the band did have another festival planned at Watkins Glen in 2018. Curveball, scheduled to take place on August 17th–19th, was canceled due to a freak environmental/public health situation just moments before the band was supposed to start their soundcheck.

The unceremonious cancellation of Curveball has further cemented Magnaball as an all-time Phish memory for many fans. Here’s hoping we’re back together there (or anywhere) soon. While the Magnaball Dinner and a Movie episode will feature three sets (the “day set” and the two evening sets), 8/22/15 at Magnaball actually saw Phish perform four sets. Following the day’s third and final “regular” set, fans drifted through the Glurt and over to the grounds’ massive drive-in movie screen for a “secret,” improv-heavy late-night set, now known as the “Drive-In Jam”.

Update 4/15/20: As many expected they would, Phish “surprise” streamed a single-camera feed of their “Drive-In Jam” on their social media accounts following the three-set Dinner and a Movie.

Of course, the fun of a Phish festival doesn’t stop with the show, or even with the “secret set.” From ditch parties to general late-night shenanigans, the campgrounds at Watkins Glen raged through the night after the planned festivities on 8/22/15. Following tonight’s Phish Dinner and a Movie stream, Show of Life will stream their full, “live from the lot” video coverage from Saturday night at Magnaball. You can tune in tonight via the Show of Life Facebook page.

If you’re looking for a few laughs before the stream gets going, head over to the Magnaball website and peruse the festival’s highly amusing FAQ page which answers such pressing questions as “Can I bring my $20,000 iWatch?” (Answer: “I guess? It kind of sounds like you just want to brag”), “Will there be payphones?” (Answer: “No, this is not 1982”), and “In space, can anyone hear you scream?” (Answer: “No”).

Below, you can also check out a pair of photo galleries from Magnaball via Dave Vann and Patrick Hughes.

Let’s get this show on the road! Tune in at 7 p.m. tonight as Phish Dinner and a Movie takes us back to Magnaball!
