Instrumental trio Photon has returned with the band’s second-ever single, “Mouse Hunt”. Released last week via Color Red Music, the song features drummer Neal Evans (Dopapod), bassist Dan Africano (Ghost Light), and keyboardist Jimmy Dunstan.
“Mouse Hunt” is a microcosm of a concept album, as the single track finds the band taking on the mentality of a mouse on the hunt. Through each musician’s unique voice and contributions, Photon is able to reflect the rodent’s mind during each stage of the fight for survival. While Photon is primarily known for its live, improvisational work, “Mouse Hunt”—and its predecessor “Bubble Up”—shows off the group’s compositional prowess.

By blending genres of jazz fusion, ambient soundscapes, and soft electronica, Photon is able to weave together seemingly divergent layers of musical textures. The musical mouse created in “Mouse Hunt” doesn’t come right out and pounce, but rather throttles back and forth through brooding moods before an eventual all-out frenzy as the track comes to a climax.
