Pigeons Playing Ping Pong funked their way into the 9:30 Club on Friday to begin their weekend run in Washington, D.C. leading up to the band’s largest headlining show to date at the nearby Anthem on Saturday.

The show, which included support from Lespecial, featured a few sit-ins throughout Pigeons’ two headlining sets from The Magic Beans keyboardist Casey Russel, and the band’s take on a Red Hot Chili Peppers classic.

Pigeons opened their first set with high energy renditions of “High As Five”, “Somethin For Ya”, “Funk E Zekiel”, and “Yo Soy Fiesta”. Russel made his way to the stage for “Whoopie” and remained with the funky four-piece for “Distant Times” and “Girlfriend is Better”.

The second set saw Pigeons return to the stage with “Lowdown”, followed by “Melting Lights” and “Skipjack”, which moved right into a cover of The Rolling Stones “Paint It Black” before returning to “Skipjack”. Russel would return to the stage towards the end of the set to play on “Kiwi” and “Live It Up” before the band wrapped the set sans keyboards with “Ocean Flows”.

The show’s two-song encore brought the band back to the stage to send “The Flock” home with “Overrun” and a cover of the Chili Peppers’ “Suck My Kiss”.
