Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and Dogs in a Pile are currently teamed up for a tour of animalistic proportions, resulting in regular cross-species collaborations. After staging a two-night, two-city Talking Radioheads Halloween run, the tour traveled to Fayetteville, AR on Thursday where Pigeons welcomed DIAP guitarist Jimmy Law for a take on The Who classic “Eminence Front”.
After opening the show with the ever-rising Dogs in a Pile, Law strolled onstage during Pigeons’ second set for the gem from The Who’s 1982 album It’s Hard. The looping keyboard intro precipitated the song’s iconic slapback funk, with Pigeons frontman Greg Ormont handling the vocals. Law took the first solo and broke open the jam with some fiery fretwork before Greg reeled it back in with the refrain. On the backend though, the improvisation became more communal as PPPP lighting director Manny Newman dimmed the lights and the sea of guitars blended together into one musical oceanic swirl.

“Eminence Front” came into Pigeons’ repertoire by way of the band’s previous Halloween mashup in 2022, blending together the songbooks of The Who and Foo Fighters to become The Who Fighters. The band’s most recent Halloween run, which featured shows in New Orleans and Austin, combined the seemingly disparate catalogs of Talking Heads (one of Pigeons’ favorite cover muses) and Radiohead.
