Dick Clark once said “Jet lag is for amateurs,” but luckily Magic Beans don’t have to worry about time zones because they’re taking a “Staycation” on their latest single. The Denver funk-jam quartet’s standalone track and accompanying music video are premiering today exclusively through Live For Live Music.

The vibe on “Staycation” is as comfortable as the song’s title suggests, with a low-key funk bounce accentuated by pops from guitarist Scott Hachey‘s Fender Stratocaster while Cody Whales holds down a tight drum pocket. Hachey’s lyrics find joy in the simple everyday things like your favorite restaurant, “a neighborhood dog that you want to meet” or “an unoccupied park bench seat.” The trio of Scott, keyboardist Casey Russell, and bassist Chris Duffy then come together to croon the chorus, “Hanging out in a familiar location, but I got a brand new sensation / One of those everyday revelations, nothing wrong with a little staycation.”

Magic Beans find their vacation in the song’s innate groove, opening up for some brief in-studio improvisation. The band recorded the song in one take, with their well-honed live chemistry on display during the jam. “Staycation” started as an instrumental and was included on the band’s latest album, Unzipped, in 2022. The Beans weren’t ready to put it down just yet, however, with Hachey tacking on some lyrics he had floating around in his head.

“Being a ‘thrifty’ musician, it’s not always an option to go to Bali or something when you need a getaway,” Hachey told Live For Live Music. “So you really just need to breathe new life into your own routine and leave some space for something fresh to happen. What if you treated your own hometown like some faraway place you visit?”
