The Leah Song and Chloe Smith-fronted Rising Appalachia have made their debut on NPR‘s “Tiny Desk Concert” series.

Based in Atlanta, sisters Leah and Chloe infuse a variety of sounds and rhythms into their American roots music. Their first tune, “Resilient”, featured just a banjo, bodhrán (Irish drum), and exquisite vocal harmonies. The rest of the band then made their way behind the tiny desk for the next song, “Medicine”, which featured Smith on acoustic guitar/vocals and Song on vocals. David Brown worked the acoustic baritone guitar with Biko Casini on percussion, while Arouna Diarra played a ngoni (West African harp) and Duncan Wickel handled the low-end on cello.

For the final song, “Cuckoo”, Leah played banjo while both Smith and Wickel played the fiddle. The “old boot-stompin’ Appalachian folk tune” combined flavors of American, Irish, and African music and storytelling.
