After much anticipation, Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter were finally inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame last evening. The ceremony, conducted at the Marriott Marquis Hotel, honored the Grateful Dead songwriting duo, as well as Bobby Braddock, Willie Dixon, Toby Keith, Cyndi Lauper and Linda Perry.
Performers were on hand to honor the inducted, including a Lady Gaga cover of Linda Perry, a Stephen Colbert tribute to Toby Keith, and a Zac Brown rendition of “Casey Jones.” Of course, Robert Hunter was there himself, giving a speech and performing a version of “Ripple”. According to reports, Hunter said “a song cannot emerge in any time but its own” and “It can take a lifetime to grasp that or an instant, whichever is longer.” He was also joined by Trixie Garcia for the speech.
