Spafford rolled with the punches on Thursday by inviting up Dani Battat (Eggy) to play following Andrew “Red” Johnson‘s positive COVID test earlier that day. Eggy opened the show at Milwaukee, WI’s Miramar Theatre, after which Battat joined Spafford for the end of the first set and most of the second.

Eggy made the most of its opening set by offering lengthy takes on “All The Way Down (Shadow Part III)”, a cover of J.E. Sunde‘s “Sunset Strip”, and finally “Ricky Gervais” to start things off. Spafford then took the stage as a three-piece consisting of Brian Moss (guitar), Jordan Fairless (bass), and Nick Tkachyk (drums).

The newly-minted power trio opened the show with a “Dirtbath” that found Moss filling in the sizable gap left by Red’s absence. The evening continued with the first “Levilan Shores” of 2021. Spafford then invited up Battat for a set-closing “Leave The Light On” that saw some semblance of normalcy return to the Arizona-bred quintet’s configuration.

The second set began with Spafford returning once again as a power trio, sans Battat, with “Double Time”. The Eggy keyboardist then emerged for “All My Friends”, which the ensemble would ride straight into “Bee Jam”. The music never stopped as the fluidity of the “Bee Jam” improvisation led into a set-closing “Mind’s Unchained”. Spafford returned to the stage for the final time, once again as a three-piece, to finish off the evening with “Parody”.

Spafford finishes out its fall tour with Eggy with another show at The Miramar Theatre tonight, November 5th, and a Saturday show at Chicago’s Park West. The band has stated that Red will sit out the remaining shows. Visit Spafford’s website for tickets and more information.
