On Thursday, The String Cheese Incident officially released their latest single, “All We Got”, from their SCI Sound Lab. The track was initially premiered via Billboard.
“All We Got” marks The String Cheese Incident’s third standalone single release of the year, on the heels of February’s “Bhangra Saanj”, featuring experimental electronic fusion group Beats Antique, and March’s “I Want You”, featuring The Infamous Stringdusters dobro master Andy Hall. The band recruited vocalist Tony White on the latest studio endeavor, written by Michael Kang and Keith Moseley with the help from close friend Jim Lauderdale.
In the accompanying video for the new release, the band takes fans on a wild ride through a land reminiscent of a music festival mashed up with Mario Kart‘s “Rainbow Road”. Over the course of the seven-minute track, “All We Got” blends Afropop, EDM, and funk, with a deliberate nod to Daft Punk‘s “Get Lucky”.
Michael Kang shared his thoughts on the new track. He explained,
We did a couple of other tracks that were very much like electro Afro-funk and knew we wanted to do another one like that. We started with the bass line, then the chorus part and we wanted to do a real nod to the EDM world as well. So we put all that together into this track.
The whole thing was another mish-mosh. It’s the way we do a lot of stuff. We like to mix it up like that.
Regarding the band’s approach of gradually rolling out singles one-by-one, Kang added,
Doing it this way we don’t have to worry about trying to mish-mosh it all together and make it sound like one thing. We can take a song that’s basically a bluegrass tune, or something in the EDM style or Afropop or whatever and just record it and let it have its life in this world. We can let the songs be what they want to be and not have to sit there and think, ‘Do these belong on the same album?
