After letting out his true voice in a landmark NPR Tiny Desk session and a recent appearance on FOX‘s The Masked Singer, T-Pain will show off his range with On Top of the Covers. The collection of seven covers by a wide array of celebrated vocalists is out on March 17th via Nappy Boy Entertainment.
The tracklist spans the breadth of some of the last half-century’s most beloved singers, from crooners Frank Sinatra and Sam Cooke to heavy metal icon Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath. T-Pain shows his tender side with a take on “Tennessee Whiskey”, as made famous by Chris Stapleton, Sam Smith‘s “Stay With Me”, and Dr. Hook‘s “Sharing The Night Together”. The “Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin’)” rapper also shows he can still get the party going without autotune, as showcased with the ’80s anthem “Don’t Stop Believin'”.
“This covers album has been years in the making,” T-Pain said. “I started recording this right after I won The Masked Singer. It got put on hold for a bit but now that I’m independent, I’m able to do whatever I want to do through Nappy Boy Entertainment and this is something I’ve felt strongly about for a long time. These songs are not what you’d expect when you hear that T-Pain is doing a covers album and that is what I think is cool about it.”
To celebrate the release of On Top of the Covers, T-Pain will perform a special pair of back-to-back shows in L.A. The An Evening with T-Pain concerts are set for March 17th and 18th at The Sune Rose at Pendry West Hollywood. The evenings’ setlists will feature songs from On Top of the Covers as well as some of his biggest hits.
