Tash Sultana has shared “Greed”, a single from the Aussie rocker’s forthcoming, unnamed album. “Greed” follows “Pretty Lady” as the second single from Tash’s unreleased sophomore studio effort.
Arriving with a bouncy bass groove and guitar dripping with reverb, “Greed” sees Tash taking advantage of a full band, moving away from their solo looping techniques. Prevalent on the track are keys, which add excellent melodic and harmonic layers and compliment Tash’s vocal work.
The vocals center around the theme of money and how it changes people’s relationships. Tash reflects on the first verse, “It’s not about the money money/Put the money in the bank/Money breeds greed and greed is really bad/Money money oh I never really had/And I got by just fine not working for the man,” before more targetted lines in the chorus: “They only give a sh!t when you make it big/Frame my memory when I’m dead and gone/Turn their back when you make a hit/But if you love me then you’ll hold it down.”
Sultana says of the song, “[Greed] is about how people change around you when you achieve some sort of success. People you’ve never had anything to do with try and climb into your life somehow, people you’ve known for ages suddenly go silent. People who never paid you for a gig suddenly want to book you.”
Tash continued, “That person from high school that gave you shit for playing the guitar suddenly wants on the guest list. It’s a funny thing all of this and what it does to people.”
