On Friday night, Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to Oakland, California’s Fox Theater, the location of the band’s Live From The Fox Oakland concert film and album that was released earlier this year in March. The famed venue clearly brings out the best in the band led by Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, with the first night of their two-night run at the Fox underlining this fact. Given that the show was opened by Hard Working Americans—the supergroup featuring Derek Trucks’ younger brother, drummer Duane Trucks from Widespread Panic—the performance was a family affair, with both acts joining forces for the show’s encore number “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere”.

While Friday’s collaborative encore was a standout highlight of the night, Tedeschi Trucks Band’s main performance took on a special energy. While there was still the usual mix of the band’s classic originals and beloved covers, the group put on a powerful performance, throwing out some curveballs along the way. Two songs relatively new to the band’s rotation made it into the fifteen-song set. First up was a cover of Neil Young’s “Alabama” off his iconic album Harvest with vocal duties locked down by Susan, a number that had been debuted only a few night earlier. The second was the Tedeschi Trucks Band original “Shame”, a song that was debuted over the summer but has increasingly been making its rounds during live shows.
