Tedeschi Trucks Band was in Chattanooga on Wednesday evening for the second of their two Tennessee performances this week as part of the southern leg of their ongoing winter tour. Having played a show in Knoxville the night prior, the groovy rock band set up shop at Chattanooga’s Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium on Wednesday evening, where earlier in the day they had offered free concert tickets to any furloughed government employees or active military personnel currently affected by the ongoing government shutdown. Thankfully, there was no governmental nonsense at the Auditorium last night—just some good ‘ol rock and roll courtesy of TTB and the Marcus King Band, who were also in the house as the show’s supporting act. More on them later…
King and company started the night with their trademark style of southern blues-rock which has earned the young bandleader a place as one of music’s hottest emerging guitar players. Tedeschi Trucks Band was up next for their first set of the night, which opened with a soulful rendition of “Laugh About It”, followed by the funkier “Part Of Me”. Trucks then let his guitar take the wheel as he tore into the opening riff of “Don’t Know What”, which continued right into a cover of Jimmy Cliff‘s “Sittin’ In Limbo”. The first half of the show continued with a rendition of Allen Toussaint‘s “Get Out Of My Life Woman”, the adrenaline-pumping “Made Up Mind”, and a drum solo courtesy of Tyler Greenwell which carried right into “Let Me Get By” to send fans into the intermission.
The second half of the show opened with a cover of Elmore James blues standard “The Sky Is Cryin'”, followed by a collective group jam based around The Allman Brothers‘ “Mountain Jam”. The band then slowed things down a bit, pulling out a fan-favorite from their 2011 Revelator LP, “Midnight In Harlem”, with Susan Tedeschi showcasing those dreamy vocals of hers. Next came a pair of Bob Dylan covers starting “Crash On The Levee” followed by “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright”. The band then returned to their own catalogue with a trio of tunes from 2013’s Made Up Mind to close out the set, as “Do I Look Worried” was followed by “Idle Wind”, which in turn transitioned smoothly into the distortion-heavy “The Storm”.
The band returned to the stage with some additional players for the encore, which included a fantastic sit-in from Marcus King and members of his band, including Dean Mitchell on saxophone, Justin Johnson on trumpet, and Deshawn “D’Vibes” Alexander. With everyone packed onto the stage, the two bands tore through a cover of Joe Tex‘s “Show Me”, King trading lead vocals with Tedeschi and Mark Rivers. The collaboration recalled the many times the members of the two bands performed together during many of the shows on TTB’s “Wheels of Soul Summer Tour” in 2018. Like any great performance, however, Wednesday’s sit-in featured a unique musical journey of its own, one which everyone in the audience was surely thrilled to be a part of.
