Earlier this month, The Rolling Stones announced the forthcoming deluxe reissue of their 1973 Goat’s Head Soup studio album, which will include remixed rarities, outtakes, alternative mixes, and unreleased songs from the original recording sessions of that era. The band shared another one of their unreleased songs to be included in the reissue on Wednesday with the never-before-heard “Scarlet”, which was recorded in October 1974 and features Led Zeppelin‘s Jimmy Page on guitar and Blind Faith‘s Ric Grech on bass.

The crunchy, bluesy-rock track doesn’t waste any time in starting up with the jangly sounds of both Page and Richards’ guitars, which are quickly joined by the powerful low-end of Grech’s bass. “Scarlet” is already up to full speed by the time Jagger chimes in for the opening lyrics of the song’s first verse. The swagger heard throughout “Scarlet” should sound familiar to any longtime fan of The Rolling Stones, as it fits right into their trademark style of the early ’70s.

“My recollection is we walked in at the end of a Zeppelin session. They were just leaving, and we were booked in next and I believe that Jimmy decided to stay,” Keith Richards said with Wednesday’s release of “Scarlet”. “We weren’t actually cutting it as a track – it was basically for a demo, a demonstration, just to get the feel of it but it came out well. With a line-up like that, you know, we better use it.”

Mick Jagger also added, “I remember first jamming this with Jimmy and Keith in Ronnie’s basement studio. It was a great session.”
