The story of intergalactic performance art-metal rockers GWAR is headed for screens big and small with This Is GWAR. The 2021 documentary was recently acquired by horror streaming service Shudder, with plans for a limited theatrical run.

This Is GWAR will premiere on Shudder on July 21st and has already begun a tour of U.S. theaters. The Scott Barber-directed feature traces the group’s origins from the 1980s through its present day, including near-commercial success and enough public controversy to fill GeraldoJerry Springer, and Howard Stern put together. Beyond the shocking live performances, however, viewers get a look behind the scene at the intense artistic output that makes GWAR possible.

A description of the film reads,

The powerful story of the most iconic heavy metal/art collective/monster band in the universe, as told by the humans who have fought to keep it alive for over thirty years. The feature documentary includes interviews with members of GWAR, both past and present, as well as other artists including Weird Al Yankovic, Thomas Lennon, Alex Winter, Bam Margera, and Ethan Embry, also including never before seen footage of legendary GWAR frontman Dave Brockie.
