[UPDATE 3/9/23]: Phish‘s Page McConnell and Trey Anastasio have shared a second preview of their new duo album, January, just hours before its release with the single “Life Saving Gun”.

The new track stands in stark contrast to the previously released “Dancing In Midair”, which had a mellow and dreamy tone and featured mostly acoustic instrumentation. “Life Saving Gun” utilizes a surprising combination of assorted synths, rhythmic acoustic guitar, and looping programmed percussion augmented by guitarist Trey Anastasio‘s drumming.

3/7/23: Phish‘s Page McConnell and Trey Anastasio have announced a new duo album, January, and shared the first track, “Dancing In Midair”, ahead of the album’s release on Friday.

January is a followup to Page and Trey’s surprise duo album December, released in December 2020, which featured stripped-down acoustic interpretations of existing Phish songs. January, in contrast, includes eight new original tracks written by the duo and featuring Page on keyboards and vocals and Trey on guitars, drums, bass, and vocals. The album was recorded and produced in January 2023 by Bryce Goggin at Trout Studios in Brooklyn, NY.

“We just walked into the studio with literally an acoustic guitar and a couple of synthesizers,” Trey said in an interview on SiriusXM‘s Phish Radio. “Songs are mysterious. They sound different. It was limiting, in a great way.”

Along with the album announcement, Page and Trey shared the first preview of the record with the single “Dancing In Midair”.
