On Sunday, Trey Anastasio Band delivered their eagerly-anticipated performance at Summer Camp Music Festival. The fantastic performance was heavy on the band’s older material (the most recent song in the first set was debuted in 2002), fan-favorite TAB/Phish crossover tunes like “Sand,” “Plasma,” “Gotta Jiboo,” “Ocelot,” “Plasma,” and “First Tube,” and staple covers like Bob Marley‘s “Soul Rebel” and Gorillaz “Clint Eastwood.” However, the emotional highlight of Trey’s Summer Camp appearance came via a debut cover during set two.

Once word of founding Allman Brothers Band vocalist/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Gregg Allman‘s death began to spread through the festival grounds on Saturday, the entire event took on a tone of remembrance for the fallen rock and roll icon–after all, virtually every band on the 2017 Summer Camp lineup can trace their lineage back to the Allman Brothers on some level or other. As quickly as the upsetting news of Allman’s passing began to spread, the musical tributes began pop up on the festival’s various stages, with Gov’t Mule, The Infamous Stringdusters, Umphrey’s McGee, all playing Allman tunes in Gregg’s honor on the day of his earthly departure.

By the time TAB’s set came around, the question was not if, but rather when and how they would pay their respects to Gregg. That mystery was resolved during the band’s second set, when Trey began to tease the Allmans’ “Midnight Rider” during “Liquid Time” before dropping into the song in earnest, providing a touching tribute for an audience in mourning. You can watch fan-shot footage from TAB’s performance of “Midnight Rider” in honor of Gregg Allman at Summer Camp below, via YouTube user Gregory Marcus:
