Following this week’s news that drummer Kris Myers is leaving Umphrey’s McGee after 22 years, we couldn’t help but think about how lucky we were to catch the band’s two-set headlining performance at Daze Between New Orleans late last month. You never know when something might be “the last time.”

In the aftermath of the Umphrey’s show at Daze Between New Orleans—produced by Live For Live MusicGMP LivePurple Hat Productions, and Dayglo Presentsheadlines about the performance largely focused on the special guests that joined in throughout the night: For most of set one, the horn section of Jennifer Hartswick (Trey Anastasio Band) and Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band) added unique brass texture to UM favorites like “Booth Love”, “Night Nurse”, “Wife Soup”, and Zonkey mashup “Electric Avenue to Hell”. During the second frame, the sextet grew to an octet once again with the addition of Jason Bonham (drums) and Robert Plant ringer James Dylan (vocals) for a full-set, three-drummer tribute to the music of Led Zeppelin.

But before the parade of sit-ins began that night, the Umphrey’s McGee lineup we’ve known for more than two decades—Brendan BaylissJake CinningerRyan StasikJoel CumminsAndy Farag, and Kris Myers—got the performance started with a three-song segment. The final song of that passage, “JaJunk”, was a prime slab of quintessential Umphrey’s rock precision. It was also the last song played live by this long-running six-piece ahead of Myers’ sudden resignation.
