Last night, Umphrey’s McGee took to Washington, DC, for a performance with The Marcus King Band at the newly opened venue, The Anthem, to kick off the band’s four-night East Coast run. During the two-set show, a major highlight of the evening included a sit-in by legendary bluegrass guitarist Larry Keel, who sat in for an acoustic rendition of Umphrey’s own “You And You Alone” and stuck around for the first set’s closer, a cover of The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence”.

After the intro song “Catshot” opened the show, marking the tune’s first appearance since spring of last year, the band launched into “40’s Theme”. While the majority of the first set housed standard (though mostly beloved) songs in Umphrey’s McGee’s catalog—”Puppet String”, “White Man’s Moccasins”, “Example 1”, and “Attachments”—the group focused on the segues between them, building the set into a frenzy early on.

The set continued to build to its ultimate climax, when the legendary Larry Keel came out to join the six-piece act for the final two songs of the frame. “You And You Alone”, a track off the band’s recently released studio album it’s not us, started the end of the set, with Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger offering up an acoustic take on the number with Keel. After the tune, the Umphrey’s guitarists returned to their electric guitars, and Keel and the band performed a goosebump-inducing rendition of The Beatles’ beloved hit, “Dear Prudence”.

As for the second set, the band opened up with another it’s not us track, “Half Delayed”, marking the 10th time the song has been played live. A string of four well-transitioned songs came next: the classic “JaJunk”, it’s not us‘s “Speak Up”, a take on “Booth Love” including “Divisions” teases, and “Stinko’s Ascension”. The latter, “Stinko’s Ascension”, is a fan favorite the band debuted at UMBowl 2015 that has only been performed live 11 other times, though most recently, the group performed it in Pittsburgh in mid-January. The second set closed with a take on the relative rarity, “Turn & Run”, and a return to the first set’s “Puppet String”. For the band’s encore, the group offered yet another number from it’s not us, “Looks”, before ending the show with a return to the second set’s “JaJunk”.
