On January 28th, Umphrey’s McGee took a whole new challenge upon themselves. The six-piece jam band announced a full set of improvisation, an hour of completely unrehearsed material, with accompaniment from the great jazz saxophonist, Joshua Redman. The scene at Madison, WI’s Orpheum Theater was electric, as extensively covered in our review of the performance.
In the weeks since the performance, music appreciators everywhere have been pining for a chance to listen. Thankfully, Umphrey’s released audio from the full set as From The Hip: A Set Of Full Improvisation. The long jam session is broken into ten chapters, ranging anywhere from 2 to 13 minutes in length. Half of them include work from Redman, who joined for the middle section of the hourlong set.
