Vintage Pistol Dances With Demons On New Single, "Dancing Again" [Listen]

We all try and do our best, to work hard, not take shortcuts, and generally try and give life our all. But there are also those days when life puts you to the test and the easy way feels like the only way. Rising Fayetteville, AR jam band Vintage Pistol knows something about the difference between the easy decision and the right decision, wisdom that permeates the band’s newest single “Dancing Again”.

The precipitously funky dual guitar attack from lead axe slinger Walt Blythe and his support Taylor Smith masks the latter’s emotionally earnest and introspective lyrics. “I don’t want to be spread thin / But all my demons feel like dancing again,” Smith sings as the band jacks up the groove and his moral compass is put to the test.

“‘Dancing Again’ is a song stemming from the sort of things that led to temptations I dealt with in early sobriety,” Smith said of the song. “Being a touring musician comes with its own set of obstacles for anyone who has struggled with drug and alcohol abuse, as well as challenges in personal life. Being able to overcome these temptations, for me, has led to better quality of life.

“I wanted to highlight the effect that this struggle has had on relationships In my life, and vice versa,” he continued. “The moment I realized how staying strong positively affected my life and the people around me, it became much easier to keep the demons at bay.”

“Dancing Again” marks the first release from the quintet—which also includes Garrett August (Hammond organ, piano) along with Jonathon Morden (bass) and Leo Walter (drums)—since the band’s 2021 album Energy. Vintage Pistol hasn’t gathered dust, however, keeping up a prodigious touring schedule ever since the return of live music post-lockdown. The band will continue its commitment to the road this summer with tour dates throughout the Eastern United States, including a set at Summer Camp Music Festival on May 26th.
