Those who didn’t get to see Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks jam together on Saturday in Macon, GA, got another chance on Sunday, when Haynes showed up unexpectedly at Tedeschi Trucks Band‘s show in Clearwater, FL. Haynes and his band Gov’t Mule were due to perform that same night at The Refinery in Charleston, SC, but postponed the show to April 2026 due to heavy rain and flooding in the area.

Sunday’s surprise sit-in at The BayCare Sound owed a bit to inclement weather and a bit more to convenient tour mapping, as Gov’t Mule’s next concert after Charleston is coincidentally in Clearwater tonight, October 14th. Though Haynes and Trucks have already collaborated a handful of times this year—between TTB and Mule’s six-show co-headlining run and The Brothers‘ reunion at Madison Square Garden—Sunday’s sit-in came as a legitimate surprise, as Haynes wasn’t on the bill this time, and was supposed to be some 450 miles away that night.

While Haynes didn’t show up until the show’s last three songs, he was onstage for over half an hour. Guitarist/vocalist Susan Tedeschi left the stage and let the boys be boys, Warren and Derek diving into TTB instrumental “Pasaquan”. The two guitarists didn’t need their microphones as they wove together the kind of co-lead lines that powered the latter-day iteration of the Allman Brothers Band through the 21st century. Ever the team players, they also shared the spotlight with drummers Isaac Eady and Tyler Greenwell for a drum solo that eventually rolled straight into Allman Brothers instrumental “Mountain Jam”, the soaring dual-lead riff conjuring memories of the seminal Southern rock band, which took its final bow in 2014.

Finally, Tedeschi rejoined the party as the chorus of voices onstage broke the lyrical silence on the closing “Space Captain”. The night’s last jam saw Haynes and Trucks lock in with trombonist Elizabeth Lea, reinforcing that, though Warren was the guest of honor, there’s still 12 other world-class musicians on that stage. As Tedeschi and Haynes brought the show to a close with their vocal harmonies, the smiles between them were less a bittersweet “goodbye” and more a jovial “see ya later.”
