Two nights ago, Elton John hosted a “Town Hall” performance for SiriusXM at Los Angeles’s Wiltern Theater. There, John took a moment to talk about his relationship with David Bowie, sharing that it was Bowie’s debut album Space Oddity that inspired John to record his own music.

“The songs were very classical orientated,” he said. “I didn’t know who I wanted to use. Then I heard a record which blew me away. It’s called ‘Space Oddity’.” Elton proceeded to perform an instrumental, jazz-influenced rendition of “Space Oddity,” before segueing into his own, thematically-appropriate song, “Rocket Man.”
