Warren Haynes and Gov’t Mule kicked off their two-night New Year’s run at the historic Beacon Theatre in New York City last night. Billed as “New Year’s Jam,” Mule and company will be paying homage to the three bands who played the legendary 1973 “Summer Jam” at Watkins Glen, the Grateful Dead, The Band, and The Allman Brothers Band tonight, but last night it was all about the Mule.

Aside from Mule staples like “Blind Man In The Dark,” “Mr. Man,” “Beautifully Broken,” and “Bad Little Doggie,” the band dialed up select covers of Jerry Garcia’s “Sugaree” with the help of Jack Pearson, Jimmy Vivino, as well as Steve Kimock, who will be joining Mule again this evening, Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released,” the Allman Brothers’ “Dreams,” and even Stevie Wonder’s iconic 1972 single, “Superstition” with world -famous drummer Carmine Appice.
