Jon Batiste and his band Stay Human turned Williamsburg into Bourbon Street yesterday, with a NOLA-style second line all down Bedford Avenue. Starting at the Bedford L stop at N 7th St., the mobile funk party made its way up the busy street towards Greenpoint to the delight and confusion of passersby.
Batiste, who was recently named future bandleader of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, led the merry crowd down the street, into restaurants, across traffic and through McCarren Park as more and more people joined in on the fun. There were children getting down and smiles all around on this beautiful sunny day. The band played covers of “You Are My Sunshine,” “Killin’ Me Softly” (The Fugees), “Isn’t She Lovely” (Stevie Wonder) and many more feel-good songs with a contagious upbeat energy.
