After a successful debut in 2022, the You Got Gold series of John Prine tribute concerts will return to Nashville in October 2023, establishing an annual tradition. The series of benefit shows, whose lineup will remain secret until showtime, will take place at storied venues throughout Music City.
The concerts begin on October 8th at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s CMA Theater, followed the next night at the Basement East, and finally wrapping on the 10th at Ryman Auditorium.
“The time I spent with John on the road made one thing very clear—the community he helped create was always, and remains, at the heart of the music, and the work we continue to do every day,” John’s widow and Oh Boy Records chair Fiona Prine reflected. “I’m so happy that You Got Gold will now become an annual event to ensure that we maintain that connection and grow our beloved community. I look forward to seeing everyone back in Nashville this October, to celebrate John’s songs and help further the work of The Hello in There Foundation.”
Prine passed away from complications due to COVID in April 2020. Due to the pandemic, any celebrations of his monolithic catalog were confined to computer screens. The Prine family originally penciled the first You Got Gold concerts for late 2021 but were forced to postpone due to spiking COVID cases.
The celebration finally arrived last fall, with Prine’s friends, contemporaries, and generations of devoted followers flooding Nashville. The concerts ran throughout the city, though the highlight was a two-night affair at the Ryman hosting Bob Weir, Brandi Carlile, Tyler Childers, Kacey Musgraves, Jason Isbell, Lucinda Williams, Bonnie Raitt, and many more.
“For us all to come together in honor of him this week is so healing for us as well as for the Prine family,” Raitt told CBS‘s Anthony Mason of the concerts. “It’s really the wake and the celebration we didn’t get to have yet.”
A ticket pre-sale for You Got Gold: Celebrating the Life & Songs of John Prine begins on Wednesday at 12 p.m. CT, accessible using the password JOHNNY. Proceeds from the shows will benefit The Hello In There Foundation, Prine’s charitable organization dedicated to supporting people who are “marginalized, discriminated against or, for any reason, are otherwise forgotten.”
