Black Pumas were the musical guest on The Kelly Clarkson Show on Monday, where the duo performed “Colors” as well as discussed their experience at the Grammy Awards last year, where they were nominated for Best New Artist.

Last week, Black Pumas released a deluxe edition of their debut album on digital platforms. The expanded version features the original 10-track recording, in addition to three previously-unreleased songs, in-studio performances, as well as covers of The BeatlesTracy Chapman, and Bobby “Blue” Bland.

The segment opens with the original American Idol winner interviewing the duo of Eric Burton and Adrian Quesada about how their sudden and meteoric rise to fame, somewhat similar to her own experience, has impacted their lives. Quesada confesses to being a bit star-struck after their appearance at the Grammy’s when they were invited to play The Roots‘ afterparty, where they also saw comedian Dave Chappelle.

Even more than the Grammy’s, what really showed the two that they made it, according to Quesada, was the creation of their own beer. In July, Austin, TX brewery 4th Tap Brewing Co-Op announced the launch of the Stay Gold Hoppy Pale Ale, named after “Stay Gold” on the group’s debut record.

“A Grammy was a huge one for sure and unexpected, but even better than that was we have our own beer coming out, which I think is a personal highlight for both of us,” Quesada quipped. “I think it’s like this is when you retire, Michael Jordan, six championships kind of style.”

With that, the video cut to a pre-recorded performance of Burton and Quesada playing “Colors”. The song, which rose to number 1 on Billboard‘s Adult Alternative Songs chart, gets the stripped-down treatment as Burton dons an acoustic guitar and Quesada provides delicate accompaniment on his electric. As the release of Amazon Music‘s The Electric Deluxe Edition showed, Black Pumas are able to reinvent and reimagine their most familiar songs into something completely new whenever the situation calls for it.
