2021 Academy Award Nominations: H.E.R., Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Jon Batiste, More

With the 2021 Golden Globes and Grammys now in the rearview mirror, the entertainment world shifts its focus to the forthcoming Academy Awards.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Monday morning revealed the full listing of nominees for its 2021 event which is scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 25th. Members of the music community who were featured in the list of this year’s nominees include Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Jon Batiste, who are nominated for “Best Original Score” thanks to their work on the Golden Globe-winning animated Pixar film, Soul. Notably, Reznor and Ross are nominated twice in that category, as the two songwriting partners were also recognized for their film score for Mank.

H.E.R., who took home Grammy trophies for “Song of the Year” and “Best R&B Song” on Sunday, received a nomination alongside Tiara Thomas and Dernst Emile II in the “Best Original Song” category for their work on “Fight For You” from Judas and the Black Messiah. Also nominated in the “Best Original Song” category is Leslie Odom Jr., who plays late singer and civil rights activist Sam Cooke in One Night In Miami and co-wrote and performed the song “Speak Now” for the film. In addition, the singer/actor was nominated for “Best Supporting Actor” for his portrayal of Cooke.

Singer Andra Day, who won the Golden Globe for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama” for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in The United States vs. Billie Holiday, was nominated for “Best Actress In A Leading Role.”

Riz Ahmed has also been nominated for “Best Actor In A Leading Role” as the rapper/actor portrayed a hard-rock drummer in the process of losing his ability to hear in the film Sound of Metal.
