BIG Something has returned with “Timebomb”, the latest release from the group’s upcoming album, Escape. “Timebomb” joins previously released singles “Heavy” and “The Breakers“.

Escape marks the Burlington, NC-based electro-jam outfit’s sixth studio album, and its first since 2018. Over the past two years, the band has continued to solidify its trademark sound with relentless touring, the fruits of which are apparent throughout these new releases.

“Timebomb” finds BIG Something diving right in with some high-energy funk grooves, as Nick Daniels‘ wah-wah washed guitar drops in at the start. From there, more effects-heavy lyrics come in from Daniels over the infectiously dancey beats. These first cuts off of Escape have shown BIG Something in a much funkier and dance-inspired aesthetic, seemingly focusing more on the communal grooves than any one instrument. The result, in the case of “Timebomb”, is a nearly four-minute long stroll through the pocket of the song that feels like it could go on for hours if the band felt like it.

While there is no official release date for Escape yet, the band has stated that the album will be out by the end of the year. Currently, BIG Something has only four scheduled gigs on the books which don’t begin until August 6th when the band hosts its annual The Big What? festival in Pittsboro, NC. Given the currently unpredictable state of the live music industry due to COVID-19, however, it is unclear how much, if at all, the band will be able to play this summer.
