Bill Kreutzmann assembled friends from Billy & The KidsALOCircles Around The Sun, and Stephen Inglis in his home state of Hawaii for Grateful Mantra, a special all-star engagement and fundraiser for Bill’s friend Mantra, who is battling an aggressive form of cancer.

Presented by Anaina Hou Community Park on September 22nd and 23rd at The Porter Pavilion in Kilauea on the island of Kauai (which Kreutzmann calls home), Grateful Mantra featured a special lineup comprised of Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz (ALO), Adam MacDougall (Circles Around The Sun), Reed Mathis (Billy & The Kids), and local Honolulu-born singer-songwriter Stephen Inglis (Stephen Inglis Project).

The jam supergroup stuck to the Grateful Dead songbook, including canon classics like “Scarlet Begonias” and “Shakedown Street”, relatively deeper cuts like “Reuben & Cherise” and “My Sisters and Brothers”, and more obscure covers like Bob Dylan‘s She Belongs To Me” and “Liberty”, a song first released on Robert Hunter‘s 1988 album of the same name before it showed up on the Dead’s So Many Roads album with the music rewritten by Jerry Garcia—and that was only night one.

Check out photos, fan-shot footage, and full taper audio from Bill Kreutzmann’s Grateful Mantra, plus a local radio interview Bill did ahead of the shows below.

Next month Kreutzmann will reunite Billy & The Kids for the Daze of the Dead Halloween run, with two nights at The Capitol Theatre and two additional shows in California. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit his website.
