Billy Strings has released pro-shot footage of his concert with Bryan Sutton from Nashville on January 8th, 2020. The show comes from Station Inn in Nashville, TN when Strings was joined by the multi-instrumental bluegrass mainstay.

The concert did not feature Strings’s usual backing band and was much more traditionally leaning than a typical show. Over nearly 100 minutes, Strings and Sutton ran through a laundry list of classic bluegrass covers.

As the video opens, the stage set up is far from any usual concert. It looks like the two men very well may have just decided to start playing guitars at the general store, as they sit on a simple stage with a lone fan’s head prominently in view. The first set ran through bluegrass classics such as “Cumberland Reel” and “Last Train From Poor Valley” as well as Doc Watson favorites like “Tom Dooley” and “Black Mountain Rag”. The duo even dipped into their respective catalogs with the Strings originals “While I’m Waiting Here” and “Love Like Me”, as well as Sutton’s own “Where I Belong”. The first set also saw Strings don the banjo and Sutton the mandolin for Henry Reed‘s “Frosty Morn”.

The second set saw the two return for more of the same, with a topical “Nashville Pickin'” by Doc Watson in the two slot, following the opening “I’m Coming Back But I Don’t Know When”. The second set also saw another Sutton original with “Walkin’ Across This Land”, alongside more choice covers, including Jerry Garcia and David Grisman‘s “Shady Grove” toward the end of the set. After a set-closing “I’ve Been All Around This World”, the band returned to the stage for an encore performance of “John Henry”.

Strings was forced to reschedule his spring tour to later this summer and into fall and even next year. He is currently due back on stage on July 20th at Vancouver, BC’s Orpheum supporting Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit on their Reunions tour. Given the gradual pace of the reopening of economies across North America due to COVID-19, however, it is possible that show, and the proceeding concerts, could also be rescheduled.
