Bob Weir and Wolf Bros continued their brief run of west coast fall dates throughout September on Friday night with a performance at the Ventura Theater in Ventura, CA. While Friday’s show marked a good start to the weekend for Grateful Dead fans in attendance, the performance also featured a unique guest sit-in during the second half of show from violinist Phil Salazar.

The trio opened the night with a mix of tunes out of the Dead songbook with “Hell in a Bucket”, “Corrina”, and “Loser”, before turning to “Only a River” from Weir’s Blue Mountain 2016 solo album. The set continued with “Black-Throated Wind”, “El Paso”, and a cover of Sonny Boy Williamson‘s  “Good Morning, School Girl”, before the first half came to a close with a performance of “Throwing Stones”.

The band returned to the stage to kick off the second half of the show with a go a Little Feat‘s “Easy To Slip”. Up next was “Friend of the Devil” with Salazar coming out to join the trio on the American Beauty classic. Salazar would remain on stage for a lovely rendition of Jerry Garcia‘s “Birdsong”. Salazar left the stage and the trio continued with “New Speedway Boogie”, followed by another Weir solo tune in “Two Djinn” and then Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower”. The set closed with “Looks Like Rain” and “Franklin’s Tower”. The band’s on song encore saw the core three members return to send fans home with another Dylan cover in “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”.
