Back in 2019, Brandi Carlile and the surviving members of Soundgarden returned to their native Seattle and hit the famed London Bridge Studio. Together this unlikely duo recorded on a pair of Soundgarden originals, with Carlile substituting for late-singer Chris Cornell, for a 2020 Record Store Day release.

Though this collaboration may seem like a network mismatch comedy, the connection between these two forces runs deeper than one might expect. First off, as a Seattle native Carlile expressed that it was a dream to record with Soundgarden. Also, the two have shared the stage before when Carlile performed “Black Hole Sun” with the surviving members of the group as the finale at the “I Am The Highway: A Tribute To Chris Cornell” concert in 2019.

While much of 2020 didn’t go as planned, the collaboration will still release the finished product, A Rooster Says, on the second of three Record Store Day Drops on September 26th. The two-song, 12″ vinyl features Carlile once-again taking on Soundgarden’s most celebrated hit, “Black Hole Sun”, as well as “Searching with My Good Eye Closed” from 1991’s Badmotorfinger.

Earlier this week, Carlile, who is also serving as this year’s Record Store Day ambassador, shared a preview of the vinyl on her Instagram page. In her decked-out attic music room, which fans received a tour of during her ambassador confirmation announcement, the indie-Americana darling shared a spooky 40 seconds from the album. The clip comes in at the intro of “Searching with My Good Eye Closed”, just as Kim Thayil‘s guitar starts to rev its engine. As the intensity ramps up and the drums build, we hear one brief moment of Carlile’s vocals before the video abruptly ends.
