Courtney Barnett traveled to Seattle, WA recently where the Australian singer-songwriter delivered four tracks off her recent album, Things Take Time, Take Time, live from the KEXP StudioThings Take Time, Take Time arrived back on November 12th via Mom+Pop/Marathon Artists and marked her first LP since 2018’s Tell Me How You Really Feel.

Joined by bassist Bones Sloane and drummer Stella Mozgawa, Barnett began the 18-minute performance with the album’s lead track, “Rae Street“. Despite carrying a more mellow tempo and vibe, seeing Barnett perform “Rae Street” with a band behind her seemed to add some uplifting energy to the delicate track. The chemistry between Barnett and the rest of her band was on full display as the trio worked through the album’s second track, “Sunfair Sundown”. Whether it was a passing glance or a point of a finger, Mozgawa and Sloane shuffled in lockstep with Barnett all the way through the set.

After bringing the energy even higher with “Before You Gotta Go” and “Turning Green”, KEXP host Cheryl Saters conducted a short interview with Courtney for the remainder of the video. Throughout the interview, Barnett talked about living alone for the first time in her life, dealing with COVID-19’s impact on the music industry, the different approaches to songwriting and recording she took with this latest album, and working with her longtime collaborator Mozgawa—who produced and played drums on Things Take Time, Take Time.

“For this album, I guess I wrote a lot of it on an acoustic guitar. I think it was just a little bit of experimentation like when we went into the studio,” said Barnett. “I feel myself on guitar going to a lot of the same kind of patterns and tricks and so I would try to like put the guitar down for a whole song and like sit—we had a nice little Wurlitzer in the studio, you know—and just try to approach the song from a different angle to see how it might influence the song.”
