Currently on their first headlining West Coast tour, the boys in Eggy stopped in San Francisco on Friday to make their headlining debut at The Independent, where they broke out “Green Earrings” by Steely Dan for the first time in nearly two years.

The jammed-out 20-minute version, footage of which was shared by the band, captures the essence of Walter Becker/Donald Fagen original first released on 1976’s The Royal Scam and later sampled by Ice Cube and other artists, but this rendition is particularly… Eggy. With keyboardist Dani Battat on lead vocals in the role of Donald Fagen, the quartet manages to extrapolate the precise, finely honed musicianship of the song’s originators into an array of styles, from funk to jamtronica to hard rock and back again.

Later in the evening, Eggy contrasted the tightly wound interplay of the Steely Dan “Green Earrings” jam with another cover, Jerry Garcia classic “Rueben and Cherise”. Making its fifth Eggy appearance ever—and aptly paying nod to the evening’s locale in the motherland of the Grateful Dead—the set-closing number takes on an atmospheric ambiance as the quartet pushes away from the song’s composed structure, probing the unknown with a light-as-a-feather touch. Watch pro-shot videos of both covers below.

As the band continues its first-ever headlining tour trek up the West Coast, Eggy will stop at the highly anticipated inaugural Cascade Equinox this weekend. Later in the year, the group will link up with Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country for a co-headlining winter tour.
